Panellus Stipticus

Today’s post is a Guest Post.  My friend Keith Garrett sent me this photo and I wanted to share it with everyone.  We talked about getting this photo last year, but never had the opportunity.  This year, he went out and got the shot!  I’ll leave it to Keith to explain what you see:

“I like to consider myself an amateur mycologist. For those who don’t know, a mycologist studies fungi.  I enjoy hiking into remote woods searching for rare and edible mushrooms.  I have known for a few years of the existence of luminescent fungi- It has been one of my “mycological goals” of this mushrooms season to photograph glow in the dark mushrooms. On a tip that someone had seen some the night before (in Vermont), I decided to walk down my little road after dark and see what I could find. 200 yards, and 25 glow-worms later, voila!  I thought my eyes were playing tricks, could it be that easy?  Anyway, I hope it is that easy in the future :)   This species is Panellus Stipticus. The exposure time is roughly 5 minutes. Each mushroom is at the largest a few millimeters across.

Photo: Nikon d80, manual, f2.8, 306 seconds exposure, 60mm nikkor macro, manual focus, iso 1600, ev +2.0
